Transfer Credits

With the exception of ProArts courses, students are expected to complete all coursework at either SMFA or Tufts after matriculation.  Students who matriculated prior to fall 2011 should check with Academic Affairs for information about previous policies that apply to them.  Exceptions that may be requested include:

  • Students who wish to make up a course or courses they have not passed
  • Students with disabilities who request transfer work as an accommodation.

In such cases, no adjustments to regular tuition will be granted.

A maximum of 7 academic courses may be transferred into the BFA program from coursework taken prior to matriculation.  Studio coursework is transferred separately.  A maximum of 38 studio credits (42 for students who matriculated prior to fall 2011) may be transferred from all sources, including coursework completed through the School’s Continuing Education programs.  Refer to the Student Handbook for additional information about transfers for summer studio coursework.

The following are additional specifications regarding academic transfers:

  • A grade of C- or better must have been earned in order for a course to be eligible for transfer.
  • Courses must have been completed at accredited, undergraduate degree-granting institutions.
  • Courses completed at two-year junior colleges may only be eligible for transfer if completed before matriculation.  After matriculation, all courses must be completed at four-year institutions.
  • No more than 5 of the maximum 7 courses may be completed through summer study.
  • No more than 3 courses may be completed in any one summer.
  • Courses must fulfill the distribution requirements of the specific Tufts degree program in which the student is accepted and must be the equivalent of a course offered at Tufts.  Note that requirements differ for BFA in Art Education candidates.
  • Courses must include a total of 42 contact hours of instruction or more in order to transfer as one Tufts course (4 credits).
  • Transferred courses are entered onto the Tufts transcript without a grade and are not computed into the cumulative GPA of the student.
  • Students may not complete their final semester with transfer work.
  • Students should be prepared to provide course descriptions and catalogs from previous institutions in addition to final transcripts in order to expedite the transfer process.  In some cases, additional back-up material such as courses syllabi or accreditation information may be required.
  • Coursework included in a previous Bachelor’s degree that has been conferred or used in fulfillment of high school graduation requirements may not be transferred.
  • On-line coursework is not transferable.
  • Initial transfer credit evaluations are made by the Registrar’s Office at the Museum School for new students and final approvals take place in the Academic Affairs Office for academic credits and the Registrar’s Office for studio credits.
