The certificate programs at the SMFA offer concentrated, professional study and lead to credentials representing proficiency and skill. Through meetings with an advisor, you will construct a highly personalized path of study to achieve your artistic and creative potential.
The certificate programs are intended for students with limited formal training in art and design as well as for those with a fine arts background or experience in their field. They consist of four required and at least four elective courses, and may be completed in two years of part-time study.
Fundamental courses in design and illustration enable you to begin building your portfolio and to develop new creative skills.
You may take advantage of the flexible and multidisciplinary education offered at the Museum School by selecting electives from the wide range of studio courses offered each term. You also may participate in the internship program, which offers hands-on opportunities with art organizations, design firms and other local businesses.
Applicants to postsecondary certificate programs at the SMFA must have at least a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. High school students who have achieved junior or senior level and upon written recommendation of their school may attend courses in the program, but are considered special students who are not candidates for the certificate. These students may apply for advanced standing in the certificate program upon graduation from high school or completion of a recognized equivalency.
