Histories of Now: Art, Digital Media, & Contemporary Social Movements, a symposium co-organized with metaLAB (at) Harvard
FREE and open to the public
“Histories of Now: Six Artists from Cairo” provides a remarkable occasion in which to consider the consequences of the art and digital media production that is currently arising in the midst of social movements globally. With an emphasis on the two cities directly engaged by the exhibition, Cairo and Boston, this symposium will bring together artists, mediamakers, designers, activists, and scholars to share and develop vocabularies, research methods, preliminary conclusions, and future strategies for understanding and writing the now and its multiple histories.
The conference is organized around three thematic nodal points: The Contested Present, Condense/Disperse, and Future Tellings. Each forms an intersection of questions about contemporary art, digital media, and processes of social transformation. These conversations, convened as a sequence of roundtable discussions, will be punctuated with the screening of digital media artworks and questions from in-person and virtual audiences. The symposium will close with a reception at "Histories of Now: Six Artists from Cairo" (SMFA Grossman Gallery & Anderson Auditorium).
